Etymology
[edit]Appears to be a coinage in Japan as a replacement for the Chinese-derived term 監獄 (kangoku, “prison, jail”).[1] Analyzable as a compound of 刑 (kei, “penance, penalty”) + 務 (mu, “work; something that must be done”) + 所 (sho, “place”).
Attested in the 現代用語辞典 (Gendai Yōgo Jiten, “Modern Term Dictionary”) of 1925.[1]
