Etymology[edit]

From ("old") + ("gold") + ("mountain"). The name refers to the gold rush in the 19th century, and "old" is in comparison to the "New Gold Mountain" (新金山) of Melbourne, Australia. 金山 can also be extended to refer to any place where riches are found.
