From 月 (tuku, combining form of tuki₂, “moon”) +‎ 讀み (yo₂mi₁, “counting”, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem or continuative form”) of verb 讀む (yo₂mu), “to count”), and referred to telling the moonphases.
