Etymology[edit]

Nominalization of the (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()() (yomikiru, to read completely).

The manga sense arose from the way that yomikiri comics are standalone story lines that can be read completely in just one volume.
