Sino-Korean word from 水 (“water”) and 曜日 (“day of the week”), from Latin dies Mercurii (“day of Mercury”), through Indian astrology in the fifth century as Sanskrit saumyavāra (saumya, “of the planet Mercury”) into Buddhist astrology in the eighth century as 水曜日 (水, “water”, the Buddhist element associated with the planet Mercury).
