Etymology[edit]

Kloekhorst proposes a reconstruction Proto-Indo-European *yรฉw-on-, which he regards as a more archaic form of Proto-Indo-European *yรฉwos (โ€œbarleyโ€). Compare Ancient Greek ฮถฮตฮนฮฌ (zeiรก, โ€œeinkorn wheatโ€) and Sanskrit เคฏเคต (yรกva, โ€œbarleyโ€).
