First attested in the 1950s–60s; from Italian amarone, augmentative form of amaro (bitter), a likely calque of Venetian amaron.

  1. An Italian full-bodied ruby to garnet red wine, characterized by a pungent, almost bitter taste. It is made in the Valpolicella region from dried-after-picking grapes of the Corvina, Rondinella and Molinara varieties.
