German[edit]
Alternative forms[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Middle High German jenner, from Latin iānuārius, as a more "natural" descendant of the same Latin word later reborrowed with the common name.
Cognate with Pennsylvania German Yenner.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Jänner m (strong, genitive Jänners, plural Jänner)
- (Austria, South Tyrol, Switzerland, Bavaria) Synonym of Januar (“January”)
Usage notes[edit]
- The word is the standard and most common form in Austria and South Tyrol, and can also be found less commonly in Switzerland and Southern Germany; this is in contrast to the also-indigenous Austrian Feber, which is now commonly replaced with Februar even in Austria.
- Uneducated people who do not have contact with speakers from these areas will likely not know, and hence not understand, this term.
