German[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Dutch klinker, which pertains to the cognate of German klingen (to sound), from the clear sound the brick makes when struck against.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈklɪŋkɐ/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Klinker m (strong, genitive Klinkers, plural Klinker)

  1. clinker (very hard brick)

Usage notes[edit]

  • While Dutch klinker refers chiefly to bricks used for pavement, the German word does not have this connotation. (Brick pavements are relatively rare in German-speaking Europe, except in parts of northern Germany.)
