German[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Borrowed from Dutch klinker, which pertains to the cognate of German klingen (“to sound”), from the clear sound the brick makes when struck against.
Pronunciation[edit]
Noun[edit]
Klinker m (strong, genitive Klinkers, plural Klinker)
- clinker (very hard brick)
Usage notes[edit]
- While Dutch klinker refers chiefly to bricks used for pavement, the German word does not have this connotation. (Brick pavements are relatively rare in German-speaking Europe, except in parts of northern Germany.)
