Etymology[edit]

From being the smaller of the two former Slave Lakes, two extremely large lakes. From being named after the Slavey people, from French Esclave, from esclave (slave), from Cree awokanek (slaves), from being a Cree exonym for the Slavey people, known among themselves as the Sahtu or Dene Tha'.
