Usage notes[edit]

  • The word is generally used only for mathematics as a school subject or scientific field. Therefore it virtually never occurs with any articles, determiners, or adjectives. When it does, it is normally feminine after Mathematik (and this is the only gender listed in dictionaries), but it might also be treated as neuter.
