Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Spanish mosquito (gnat), diminutive of mosca (fly), from Latin musca (fly), from Proto-Indo-European *mūs- (fly, stinging fly, gnat).

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /mɔsˈkiːto/, /moˈskiːto/
  • (file)

Noun[edit]

Moskito m (strong, genitive Moskitos, plural Moskitos)

  1. mosquito
Synonyms: Mücke, Stechmücke; (south-eastern) Gelse; (south-western) Schnake

Usage notes[edit]

  • The word is of intermediate frequency in southern Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, where the standard term Mücke has a broader and hence ambiguous sense.
  • In northern and central Germany, Moskito is sometimes used to refer to tropical species but is otherwise rather uncommon.
