Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Origin uncertain. Possibly from a nasalized variant of *pīccāre (compare doublets French pincer and dialectal picher, pisser; also Italian pizzare), or perhaps a merger of Latin *punctiō (puncture, sting) and *pīccō (strike, sting).

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

*pīnciō (present infinitive *pīnciāre, perfect active *pīnciāvī, supine *pīnciātum); first conjugation (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. puncture, prick, pierce, pinch
