Etymology[edit]

Unclear, possibly from *līką (body, shape) +‎ *-inōną or *līkinō (mercy, recovery) +‎ *-ōną, or a merger of both. West Germanic only has the meaning "to compare", whereas Nordic also has the meanings "to show mercy" and "to care for".
