Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including. There is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome! Mglovesfun (talk) 08:56, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pashto nouns[edit]

Hi, the template {{infl}} automatically adds the correct category when you specify "noun" like you already are doing, so adding the category at the bottom doesn't hurt, but it doesn't do anything either. Keep up the good work, Mglovesfun (talk) 08:56, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! Avestan Pashtun 11:25, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Pashto translation request[edit]

Please, could you add the Pashto translations for various senses of (deprecated template usage) listen and (deprecated template usage) parrot? These are model pages of Wiktionary format, so having a Pashto translation in each will help other users. --EncycloPetey 23:26, 12 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

I added the Pashto translations for both listen and parrot. Thanks, Avestan Pashtun 21:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much! --EncycloPetey 02:33, 16 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

اورېدل[edit]

Is the stress on the second syllable or the third: aw-RE-dəl or aw-re-DəL? —Stephen 18:07, 17 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The stress is on the third syllable: aw-re-DəL.
اورېدل means "to hear" (infinitive) as well as "they [masc.] were being heared" eg. tā duy awredəl means "you (sing.) were hearing them (masc.)".
اورم (AW-rəm) means "I hear" and this form is listed in this dictionary which lists sing. first person present forms of verbs. Thanks, Avestan Pashtun 06:27, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see. Thanks. —Stephen 06:46, 18 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Heley[edit]

This is down as a Pashto proper noun. Surely it can't be. See the page's history. Mglovesfun (talk) 17:12, 20 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alternative spellings use the template {{alternative spelling of}}. We avoid redirects in cases like this. Since I don't know Pashto, could you do it, please? Mglovesfun (talk) 11:30, 26 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

pūnda[edit]

Hello. Could you create an entry for the Pashto word for heel. According to one etymological dictionary it should be pūnda and it is needed in proper script for other Indo-European akin words such as пета. Thanks in advance. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 12:19, 1 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

I created the entry for پونده. Thanks, Avestan Pashtun 04:39, 2 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

willow[edit]

Hello. Could you provide the translation for willow in Pashto (willow#Translations)? Thanks in advance. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 20:07, 1 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bogorm, I provided the Pashto translation for willow and created the entry for وله. Thanks, Avestan Pashtun 16:45, 2 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

γumba[edit]

Hello, Avestan Pashtun. Is there a Pashto word γumba whose meaning is supposed to be dent. Could you kindly create an entry? It is cognate with Russian губка (sponge) and many other Slavic words. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 09:50, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi Bogorm, I created an entry for غومبه (γumba) whose meaning is swelling according to this Pashto-Pashto dictionary and this Pashto-Persian dicionary. And Pashto for sponge is سپنج (spanj). Thanks, Avestan Pashtun 16:37, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. I have no doubt about the meaning which you explained, but the deviation in my suppositions is due to the fact that I stumbled upon the word in an etymological dictionary written in German and that German Beule can mean swelling and dent as well. Apparently, I have picked up the wrong meaning of those two. I linked the entries. The uſer hight Bogorm converſation 20:12, 16 March 2010 (UTC)Reply
You have been unblocked. Maro 21:01, 13 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

|sc=ps-Arab|xs=Pashto[edit]

Hi,

Please don't waste your time on removing this from the translations as this will be added again by bots. You can use the time better by adding new translations. --Anatoli (обсудить) 22:51, 28 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thanks for the friendly guidance but I was actually fixing Pashto spellings. And yes, I am also adding new translations. Avestan Pashtun (talk) 08:03, 30 March 2012 (UTC)Reply
