From Middle High German zehent, zehente, zehnde, zehende, from Old High German zehanto (tenth, tithe), from Proto-West Germanic *tehundō, from Proto-Germanic *tehundô (tenth). Cognate with German Low German Teihnte, Dutch tiende, English tithe.
