Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Unclear. Possibly a contraction of an earlier *bedhtë, with -të adjectival suffix, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰed-rós, from Proto-Indo-European *bʰed- (to improve, make better). Cognate with English better, Sanskrit भद्र (bhadra, blessed; good; excellent), Avestan 𐬵𐬎𐬠𐬀𐬜𐬭𐬀 (hubaδra, fortunate). Alternatively to be compared with Lydian 𐤡𐤠𐤯𐤯𐤬𐤳 (pattoš, king)), Ancient Greek Ancient Greek βᾰσῐλεύς (basileús), Illyrian Bato, and Proto-Indo-European *bʰéh₂ti (to speak).
