Originally probably meaning 'to call someone a pitiful man', from božec (pitiful man), ubog (pitiful) (cognate to Old Church Slavonic ubogъ (ubogŭ), Serbo-Croatian ubog, Russian ubógij (ubógij), Czech ubohý); this in turn from Proto-Slavic *ubogъ (having no share), composed from *u- (away, down) and *bogъ (share).
