Danish[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

IPA(key): [ˈb̥ʁanə, ˈb̥ʁɑnə]

Etymology 1[edit]

Derived from the verb.

Noun[edit]

brænde n (singular definite brændet, not used in plural form)

  1. wood, firewood
Inflection[edit]

Etymology 2[edit]

The Danish verb is a fusion of two related verbs: 1. the intransitive Old Norse brenna, brinna (past tense brann), from Proto-Germanic *brinnaną, and 2. the transitive Old Norse brenna (past tense brenda), from Proto-Germanic *brannijaną. They are still kept apart in Swedish: intransitive brinna (past tense brann) vs. transitive bränna (past tense brände).
