Learned borrowing from Italian clarinetto diminutive of clarino (“‘trumpet’”) (as the first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet)
Alternatively, the word may come from French clarinette, diminutive form of clarine (“‘bell’”), from clarin, from clair (“‘clear’”).
