Etymology[edit]

Learned borrowing from Italian clarinetto diminutive of clarino (trumpet) (as the first clarinets had a strident tone similar to that of a trumpet)

Alternatively, the word may come from French clarinette, diminutive form of clarine (bell), from clarin, from clair (clear).
