conservative force (plural conservative forces)

  1. Used other than figuratively or idiomatically: see conservative,‎ force.
  2. (physics) A force the work done by which is independent of the path taken and depends only on the initial and final positions of the object; equivalently, the total work done by a conservative force is equal to zero when the path taken is a closed loop.
