From Proto-Balto-Slavic *dúbna with a dissimilatory change from */bn/ to /ɡn/, from Proto-Indo-European *dʰubʰnós. Cognate with Old Prussian dubnas (“bottom”), Old Church Slavonic дъно (dŭno, “bottom”). Compare English deep.
