From Middle High German gehürnet, from Old High German *gihurnit, from Proto-Germanic *hurnidaz, past participle of Proto-Germanic *hurnijaną (to horn), equivalent to ge +‎ Horn +‎ -t. Cognate with Old Frisian herned (horned), Old English ġehyrned (horned) (English horned), Old Norse hyrndr (horned).
