Etymology[edit]

From Old Irish gním, from Proto-Celtic *gnēm-, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵneh₃- (to know). Cognate with Old English cnāwan (English know); and with Sanskrit जानाति (jānāti, to know), Old Armenian ծան- (can-, to know), Old Persian [script?] (xšnāsātiy, they will know), Ancient Greek γιγνώσκω (gignṓskō), and Latin nōscō. Akin to Irish déan. Compare Scottish Gaelic gnìomh.
