From Medieval Latin gingiber, from Latin zingiber, from Ancient Greek ζιγγίβερις (zingíberis), of Middle Indic origin (akin to Pali सिन्गिभेर "singibera"), from Dravidian roots, compare Tamil இஞ்சி (iñci, ginger) + வேர் (vēr, root).
