Borrowed from Late Latin hypocrisis, from Ancient Greek ὑπόκρισις (hupókrisis, answer, stage acting, pretense), from ῠ̔ποκρῑ́νομαι (hupokrī́nomai, to reply), from ὑπό (hupó, under, hypo-) + the middle voice of κρῑ́νω (krī́nō, to separate, to judge, to decide).
