From Old Irish lathach (“mire, puddle”),^[1] from Proto-Celtic *latyos (“moist”), from Proto-Indo-European *lat- (“damp, wet”), see also Old Norse leðja (“mud”), Albanian lag (“to moisten”).^[2]
