Etymology[edit]

Formally, an -e-derivative from a causative in -tta, though no verb liivattaa is attested. The root is the now-obsolete liiva (mud, slime), cognate with Estonian liiv (sand) and ultimately a loan from Proto-Germanic *slīwą, whence also eg. Icelandic slý.
