Sino-Vietnamese word from 冥 (“underworld”) and 司 (“department”).

     Hắn quyết chống chọi với nhà thầy, hiện đã kiện thầy ở Minh ti. Tôi thừa lúc hắn đi vắng nên lén đến đây báo cho nhà thầy biết để mà liệu kế, khỏi phải chết một cách oan uổng.

     He's trying to take you down at all costs, and has sued you at the Underworld Department. I surreptitiously came here when he was away to warn you, so that you won't die of unjust cause.

     Hơn nữa, lại có lời ghi chú là : « Trạng nguyên Mạc Đĩnh Chi chết xuống Minh ty (tức Âm ty) bảy ngày, thấy cảnh các địa ngục; sau được sống lại, làm bài phú dạy con ».

     There is also a note, “Zhuangyuan Mạc Đĩnh Chi descended to the Underworld Department seven days after he died and had a good view of the hells; when he was resurrected, he made a fu to teach his child.”

     Đáp xong lại kể chuyện mình đã nhận chức quan lớn dưới Minh Ty. Nghĩ đến tình giao du thân ái ngày xưa mới tìm thăm bạn.

     He then told the story of how he got an important post in the Underworld Department. He only looked for his friend because he had reminisced about their earlier friendship.

Usage notes

The quotation above uses the unhyphenated spelling Minh ti in the 10th-grade Vietnamese texbook. Ngô Văn Triện (aka Trúc Khê), currently the sole translator of Truyền kỳ mạn lục, used the hyphenated Minh-ty.

Etymology 2
