From Latin pulmōnārius (“of the lungs”), from pulmō (“lung”) + -ārius, from Proto-Indo-European *pléu-mon-. Cognate with Greek πλεμόνι, French poumon, Lithuanian plauciai, Polish płuco and Russian плавать (“to swim”).
