From Latin pulmonarius (of the lungs) < pulmonem (accusative of pulmo, lung) < Proto-Indo-European *pleu- (to flow, to float, to swim). Cognate with Greek πλεμόνι, French poumon, Lithuanian plauciai (lungs), Polish płuco, and Russian плавать (to swim).
