From Latin pulmōnārius (of the lungs), from pulmō (lung) + -ārius, from Proto-Indo-European *pléu-mon-. Cognate with Greek πλεμόνι, French poumon, Lithuanian plauciai, Polish płuco and Russian плавать (to swim).
