Etymology[edit]

From Old Frisian *rubja, *rubbia, from Proto-West Germanic *rubbōn, from Proto-Germanic *rubbōną. Cognate with West Frisian robje (to rub, hit), English rub, Dutch rubben (to rub, scrub, get rid of scales), Icelandic rubba (to scrape).
