From Proto-Germanic *sweltaną. Cognate with Old Saxon sweltan, Old High German swelzan, Old Norse svelta ( > Danish svelte), Gothic 𐍃𐍅𐌹𐌻𐍄𐌰𐌽 (swiltan).
