Etymology

túl (“beyond”) +‎ -i (adjective-forming suffix). It is an adjective formed from a postposition, so that it can be used attributively to mark the qualifier of a noun (preceding it), rather than marking the modifier of a verb (or verb derivative), like an adverbial.
