Etymology[edit]

total +‎ språk +‎ ordbok

Noun[edit]

totalspråksordbok c

  1. a dictionary of the whole language[1] (covering all varieties within all dimensions of a language)

Usage notes[edit]

  • Lexicographers make a distinction between an allvarietetsordbok (an all-varieties dictionary), covering all varieties within one dimension, e.g. all dialects, and a totalspråksordbok (a dictionary of the whole language), covering all varieties of all dimensions of a language. Examples of the latter are the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) and Svenska Akademiens Ordbok (SAOB).
