Finnish[edit]

(index tu)

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Finnic *tuntedak, from Proto-Uralic *tumte-. Cognates include Estonian tundma, Northern Sami dovdat, Hungarian tud.

Verb[edit]

tuntea

  1. (transitive) to feel, sense, (to be aware of)
  2. (transitive) to know (meaning deeper and more personal knowledge on something, see usage notes)

Conjugation[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

(to know): The English verb "to know" can be translated into Finnish with either tietää or tuntea. The difference is that tietää expresses usually superficial knowledge on something, e.g. knowledge on the existence of the thing in question, whereas as tuntea expresses more personal, subjective, detailed or deeper knowledge.

Tiedän hänet, mutta en tunne häntä.
I know her (by name), but I don't know her (personally).
