Bulgarian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Slavic *račiti. Cognate with Serbo-Croatian рачити се/račiti se (to please), Slovene ráčiti (condescend), Slovak ráčiť (condescend, deign), dialectal Russian рачи́ть (račítʹ, desire), Polish raczyć się (enjoy). Compare Gothic 𐍂𐌰𐌷𐌽𐌾𐌰𐌽 (rahnjan, reckon), Sanskrit रचयति (racayati, arrange). According to Jooseppi Julius Mikkola the Slavic words are of Germanic (compare Old Norse rœkja (to reck, take care of), German geruhen (to condescend)) origin, but this is contested by Vasmer.
