From Proto-Indo-Aryan *páHti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *páHti, from Proto-Indo-European *peh₂- (to protect). Cognate with Old Persian 𐎱𐎠𐎮𐎹 (pādiy), Latin pascō, Mycenaean Greek 𐀡𐀕 (po-me).
