From Sanskrit आज्ञा (ājñā, “order, command; authority, power”); perhaps via Old Khmer ñā, ʼājñā (“(royal) order, command, behest; by order (of); highness: constituent of royal titles; etc”). Cognate with Modern Khmer អាជ្ញា (ʼaacñaa).
