Derived from Middle Dutch Oyen, from the dative plural of ooi, oo (low-lying pasture near water),[1] ultimately from Proto-Germanic *agw(i)jô- (belonging to the water), from *ahwō (water),[2] from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ékʷeh₂. Compare Dutch Aijen.
