Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *ēbanþsternǭ. Cognate with Old Saxon āƀandsterro, Old High German ābantsterno, Old Norse aptanstjarna. Equivalent to ǣfen (“evening”) +‎ steorra (“star”).
