Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Germanic *airundiją (message). Cognate with Old Frisian erende, Old Saxon ārundi, Old High German āruntī, Old Norse eyrindi (Danish ærinde, Swedish ärende). Apparently related to Old English ār (messenger).
