Hungarian

Etymology

ész +‎ -lel (causative suffix) Created during the Hungarian language reform, which took place in the 18th–19th centuries.[1]

Pronunciation

  • IPA(key): [ˈeːslɛl]
  • Hyphenation: ész‧lel

Verb

észlel

  1. (transitive) to perceive
  2. (transitive) to observe, notice, detect

Usage notes

Even though both érzékel and észlel may be translated as “to perceive”, strictly speaking, it is only észlel that covers this concept (the organisation, identification, and interpretation of sensory information), and érzékel means “to sense”.
