French

Etymology

[edit]

From étage +‎ -er.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /e.ta.ʒe/
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

étager

  1. to layer, to set one above the other
Les collines, qui s'étageaient en arrière de la côte, se montraient couronnées d'arbres verts, parmi lesquels le pin dominait. (Jules Verne, Le Pays des fourrures, 1873)
    Étager des redoutes.
  2. to set in progressive installments
    Étager les paiements.

Conjugation

[edit]

This is a regular -er verb, but the stem is written étage- before endings that begin with -a- or -o- (to indicate that the -g- is a "soft" /ʒ/ and not a "hard" /ɡ/). This spelling change occurs in all verbs in -ger, such as neiger and manger.
