Inherited from Proto-Slavic *ščapъ.[1] Cognates include Slovene ščap (stick, cudgel), Lower Sorbian šćap (shepherd's staff) and Slovak štiap (stick, pole). Further compare Latvian šķēps (spear) and Proto-Germanic *skaftaz (shaft, spear). Unrelated to German Stab.
