From earlier [Book Pahlavi needed] (*ʾwytplyt), ecclesiastical borrowing from Zoroastrian Avestan *𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬋𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (*uštōfriti) (compare Avestan 𐬎𐬯𐬆𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (usəfriti, offered, oblated)), from 𐬎𐬱𐬙𐬀 (ušta), perfective participle of 𐬬𐬀𐬯 (vas, to want, wish) + 𐬟𐬭𐬌𐬙𐬌 (friti, prayer).[1]
