From Byzantine Greek ἀλωπού (alōpoú), ἀλωπώ (alōpṓ), from Ancient Greek ἀλώπηξ (alṓpēx), from Proto-Hellenic *alōpēkos (similar to Old Armenian աղուէս (ałuēs)), diminutive of Proto-Indo-European *h₂wl(o)p ~ *h₂ulp ((red) fox) (compare Latin volpēs, Lithuanian lãpė, Albanian dhelpër, Persian روباه (rubâh)).
