Etymology

From Ancient Greek ἀνάθεμα (anáthema, “something dedicated, especially dedicated to evil”), from ἀνατίθημι (anatíthēmi, “I set upon, offer as a votive gift”), from ἀνά (aná, “upon”) + τίθημι (títhēmi, “I put, place”).
