From Byzantine Greek ἀφοῦ (aphoû), from Koine Greek ἀφ’ (aph’) and οὗ (hoû), from Ancient Greek ἀπό (apó) and οὗ (hoû, masculine genitive singular of the relative pronoun).

Usage notes

The use of αφού (afoú) and αφότου (afótou), along with μετά που (metá pou) (colloquially) are used in conjunctive statements including a verb. When the conjunctive phrase does not contain a verb, the use of μετά (metá) is appropriate. Conjunctive phrases that use μετά (metá) are followed by the accusative.

Αφού τελείωσε η δουλειά, φύγαμε.

Afoú teleíose i douleiá, fýgame.

After the work was finished, we left.

Μετά την ταινία, φύγαμε.

Metá tin tainía, fýgame.

After the movie, we left.
