From an earlier unattested *γραυρος (*gravros) (with assimilatory deletion of the *ρ (*r)), from *γλαύρος (*glávros) (with assimilation *λ (*l) > *ρ (*r)), from Byzantine Greek ἔγγραυλος (éngraulos, “sardine”) (with metathesis of the λ (l) and ρ (r)), from Ancient Greek ἔγγραυλῐς (éngraulis, “European anchovy”).
