γριά (griáf (plural γριές, masculine γέρος)

  1. old woman, old lady (elderly female person)
    Βοηθώ μια γριά να περάσει τον δρόμο.Voithó mia griá na perásei ton drómo.I help an old lady to cross the road.
  2. (colloquial) old lady (one's mother)
    Τον ενοχλεί συνεχώς η γριά του να παντρευτεί.Ton enochleí synechós i griá tou na pantrefteí.His old lady is constantly bothering him to marry.

Usage notes[edit]

  • γριά can be used as adjectivally and has the comparatives:
    πιο γριά (pio griá, older)
    γεροντότερη (gerontóteri, older)
  • But note the more usual adjective παλιός (paliós, old, worn, shabby, previous, former)
